Short answer: clear gutters once or twice a year — ideally in late autumn once leaves have fallen, and again in spring if you have trees nearby.
Signs your gutters need clearing
- Water spilling over the edge when it rains
- Plants or moss growing out of the gutter
- Damp patches or green streaks on walls
- Gutters sagging or pulling away from fascias
- Downpipes not draining
Why it matters
Blocked gutters overflow onto walls and foundations, which can lead to damp, damaged brickwork and rotten fascias. Clearing them is quick and far cheaper than repairs.
